What 6-Axis and 6-DoF Mean on a Robot Arm
A 6-axis robot arm has six independently driven rotary joints, which gives its end effector six degrees of freedom — three for position (X, Y, Z) and three for orientation (roll, pitch, yaw). Six degrees of freedom is what lets an arm reach a given point in a chosen orientation rather than simply arriving there, which is why a 6-DoF robot arm is the standard choice for teleoperation, imitation learning and manipulation research. Five-axis arms cannot reach every orientation.
Star Arm 102 is a 6+1 DoF platform: six arm joints plus an independently driven gripper, so the end effector can both position and grasp. The LD, HD and FL configurations share the same 6+1 DoF architecture, 420mm reach and 12-bit encoders — the differences are in control role, servo class and whether the unit ships assembled or as a kit.
